| BACKGROUND The Newington Children's Theatre was formed in 1963 by the Newington Parks and Recreation Department. In the succeeding years, it has entertained thousands of people by touring throughout Connecticut and also performing in New Hampshire, Vermont, New Jersey, and Virginia. Recent shows include: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, Sleepy Hollow, The Jungle Book, Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin, Oz, Beauty and the Beast, and The Secret Garden. In 2002, a group of volunteers associated with the program for many years, decided with the Newington Parks and Recreation Department, that it was time for us to move forward and become an independent, publicly supported theatre organization carrying on the same traditions and more. Thus, began The Newington Children's Theatre Company. The Newington Children's Theatre Company (NCTC), governed by a Board of Directors, is committed to presenting the best in children's theatre. Through its performances, classes and workshops, its Summer Theatre Arts Program for students aged 8-14, and its newest program, the Summer Musical Theatre Program for high school and college students, NCTC helps to foster a better understanding of the theatre arts. NCTC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Its activities are made possible through the time and efforts donated by numerous volunteers and generous contributions from individuals, foundations, and corporations. | PROGRAMS Its showcase program, The Newington Children's Theatre Touring Company, begins its season in the fall and ends in April, putting on performances throughout Connecticut and the region. This traveling troupe of young actors and technical assistants is open to those from 10-18 years of age. Auditions for students seeking performing roles, along with interviews for those wishing to work on the technical aspects of the production (costumes, set construction, lighting, and sound), are held during the early fall. Rehearsals start in early-fall and continue through January. The annual tour begins in February and continues until mid-spring. Classes and workshops are offered each fall and spring semester at our new educational theatre facility in Newington. An acting classroom, dance studio, costume and set shops, and a black box theatre are available for instruction, rehearsal, and performance. Our Summer Theatre Arts Program runs for four weeks during the month of July. This all day program (M-F) provides classes in acting, dance, and voice and culminates in a public performance, showcasing the talents of all the participants. During the summer of 2005, "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" was presented. The Summer Musical Theatre Program, which premiered in 2005 with a production of "Footloose," is the newest of NCTC's programs. It provides participants with five weeks of intensive instructional, rehearsal, and production work under the direction of a professional director, choreographer, and musical director and leads to performance of a full-scale musical in our Black Box Theatre. |
